| The designer is before a whole professional of the
design. He can be a of course fashion designer but its
competences are also very appraisals in marketing. The
consultant free lance does not conceive itself the manufacture of
prototypes but advises the industrialists or the offices of style.
The applicability is varied: surface coatings, furniture,
shoes, accessories in any kind, household linen... Like any
artist, the designer must be sensitive, curious, rigorous and
intuitive. To create forms, to design original clothing, to
launch new fashions, to innovate by using materials avant-gardists, it
must have this innate gift which makes him anticipate the tendencies.
And even if the trade is computerized more and more, artistic
qualities are of primary importance. A direction of the
communication and marketing are imperative because any artist must
know to be sold and make known himself. Pure creation represents
only 15 % of the time of the designer! It is finally necessary
to be impassioned to support the constraints of an irregular activity.
The market and the risks Less than 7 000 designers without
distinction of sector officiate in France, including 1 700 textile
designers. The trade allures much the young people, who are
not always aware of the difficulties which await them. Their
number is considered to be too important besides by the professionals.
The market grows rich each year by 1 000 new designers and, in
spite of this plentiful fish pond, the workshops pain to unearth young
talented specialists. The rate of unemployment in the sector
remains high. With regard to textile industry, the economic
situation improves since 1998 and confirms the significant part of the
export sales. But the air pockets are numerous!

| To create its own line of clothing or to mount its box
remains a test difficult to transform. Only a solid experiment
crédibilise the freelance designer. In loan-with-carrying it, a
collection is conceived on average six months before its presentation
with the public. The models are ordered by the retailers for the
following season then put in manufacture. However, they will be
paid only several months afterwards, which forces to envisage a
consequent treasury. To design a first collection of a score of
models, the creator must have 15 000 euros at least. The
first model created is invoiced three times the price of the
following. No office of serious style can occur from powerful
data-processing tools. From this point of view, the note is
salted! Count of 45 000 to 50 000 euros for modern
equipment and of quality allowing the creation and the drawing
computer-assisted. Will finally know that the designers are
referred among the authors in visual arts and that for this reason
they can profit, under condition, of assistances to the edition,
allowances of search and a blow for inch to creation and the first
exposure.
